WHAT IS IT?
Pilates is a workout using small, controlled movements which, when practised with consistency helps to build strength, improve flexibility, as well as developing control throughout the entire body. Often the movements are intensified using equipment such as Pilates balls, booty bands and yoga bricks.
WHY SHOULD I DO IT?
It’s a workout that can be tailored to beginners as well as the more seasoned exerciser. There are a number of principals involved with Pilates practise which include breathing, control, flow, precision, centering and alignment. The small, controlled movements help to strengthen the abdominals and the back but also the body as a whole. Stability is required in the shoulders and the pelvis to execute many of the movements thus helping to increase the body’s overall endurance.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?
This class is largely done on the mat. We start the class off with some back mobilisation drills to warm up the spine and lower back. We also do some work to locate our ‘neutral’ spine. We do exercises in supine (face up), prone (face down), on our side, in sitting position and in quadraped (all 4’s). This means that we work all 4 sets of our abdominals and give our core the balance it deserves. We end the class with a series of stretches.
WHAT SHOULD WEAR?
Gym wear that you can move easily in and wearing socks or Pilates socks is recommended.
Here’s what our clients say about it…
“It’s the one class that my abs absolutely burn, every single time! And it’s always different, we really mix it up with different things like the ball and bands”. – Tracey
